Welcome to the Himalayas of Nepal! Home to 8 of the tallest mountains in the world, Everest Base Camp trekking is the most popular trekking destination in the Nepal attracting thousands of tourists each year. Standing tall at 8848m, Mount Everest or Sagarmatha as it is known in Nepal is renowned amongst tourists not just for the majestic peak itself but also for the hospitality of its native people, the Sherpas, who live in the surrounding areas. Sherpas were once nomads and traders exchanging yak hides and sundry items for salt and wool. Known for their physical prowess and ability to adapt to high altitudes, today, most Sherpas are porters and guides to those who dare to venture the Everest Base Camp trek.
Once off the airplane at Lukla, the Everest Base Camp trekking begins in the Khumbu region and goes through the small Sherpa villages of Choplung, Monju and the famous market town of Namche Bazar. In Namche you will be greeted with lots of warm smiles and 'Namastes' from the local Sherpas. Along the Everest Base Camp trekking path, you will follow the Dudh Koshi (Milky river) and walk through many Sherpa villages. Besides the fantastic panoramic views of snow-covered mountains, you can enjoy the scenery change with the altitude graduating from thick forests of pine, fir, birch, and rhododendrons to alpine plants to bare rock and snow as you cross the timberline.
Ascending to Kala Patthar you will be at the best vantage point to take in the stunning views of the mighty Everest and its range from top to bottom before rerouting to Everest Base Camp. Nowadays, Kala Patthar is highly recommended for its panoramic views of the Himalaya range.
